Thursday Tacos and rockin’ at Port Allen

The Nawiliwili Tavern acts as the hub of Kalapaki Bay’s Thursday
night scene. From here, it is a walking distance to Duke’s, the
Marriott, Café Portofino, Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove. But the
biggest attraction on Thursday nights could very well be Pepe’s
Rockin’ Tacos.
Located immediately to the right of the Tavern’s front entrance,
Pepe’s Rockin’ Tacos has been holding shop for about a year.
Shredded chicken, shredded cheese, and a variation of pico de gallo
with red cabbage placed on small tortillas — these treats will
satisfy anyone’s midnight appetite.
This business is affiliated with Nawiliwili Tavern and
comprises Shardey Reed, of Hanapepe, and Jessica Amos, of Kalaheo.
Both of them also act as vendors under the taco tent.
“People sometimes go out [on Thursday nights] just for the
tacos,” said Reed. On a regular night, she can sell up to 100 tacos
an hour. The most any person has ordered from them is 50.
Starting from 12:30 a.m. on Thursday nights and running out at
around 2:30 am, Pepe’s Rockin’ Tacos are on sale for $2 each, 50
cents extra to include a homemade chipotle sauce.
Elizabeth Gonzales, a Pride of America cruise ship worker from
San Francisco, Calif., said she is Mexican and she eats Pepe’s
Rockin’ Tacos every Thursday night. This particular night, Gonzales
(in her own words) “devoured” three.
On the first Saturday evening of April, patrons of the Port
Allen Sunset Grill and Bar were treated to a private concert from
Acoustic Medicine. Under the awning along the restaurant’s outdoor
deck, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Goding fronts the
band. Other members are Mario Rodriguez, percussion; Mike Oliva,
drums; Les Johnson, bass; Kirk Smart, lead guitar; David Braun,
trumpet; and Jim Winkler, Hammond organ.
According to the their website (acousticmedicine band.com), the
band’s music is “an attempt to get the listener thinking about how
the U.S. acts towards the world and its own people.” Acoustic
Medicine is also willing to spread its message free of charge.
Through a band profile on Facebook, you can download a number of
songs at no cost.
The Port Allen Sunset Grill and Bar features free live
entertainment every Wednesday to Saturday, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
